Chemical engineering involves the production and manufacturing of products through chemical processes. This includes designing equipment, systems, and processes for refining raw materials and for mixing, compounding, and processing chemicals. Chemical engineers translate processes developed in the lab into practical applications for the commercial production of products, and then work to maintain and improve those processes. Chemical Engineering today plays a pivotal role in the development of nations.
The Department of Chemical Engineering at NIT Srinagar was established in year 1963 initially for five year undergraduate degree programme .The student intake initially was 27. The duration of degree was later changed in the year 1981 to four years in concurrence with that time regulations at national level. The department has progressed significantly since then in all respects. Currently Department offers B.Tech and M.Tech degree programmes with total student intake of 103 and 19 respectively. Students are also pursuing their Ph.D research under the guidance of faculty members of the Department.
Presently twelve highly experienced faculty members with diverse research fields are working on regular basis in the Department.
As we know Chemical engineering requires basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, the course syllabus has been accordingly tuned. The course schemes at B.Tech and M.Tech level include the fundamental subjects like; reaction engineering, thermodynamics, transport phenomena , mass transfer, Heat transfer, Material and Energy balance, Process equipment design, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical operations etc. The academic programme schemes have been designed in tune with the requirements of the industry .A range of elective courses also exists in the schemes framed according to local and national trends in the field of Chemical Engineering. Course schemes are regularly updated to meet the expectations of industry and other relevant public and private organizations.
The students are rigorously trained and evaluated on a continuous basis in order to transform them into world class Chemical Engineers. The Department has well equipped laboratories like Fluid mechanics & Mechanical operations laboratory, Heat transfer laboratory, Thermodynamics & Reaction Engineering laboratory, Mass Transfer Laboratory, etc.
To compliment the theoretical courses taught at graduate and post graduate level and to handle research in thrust areas Research laboratories also exist in the department. The laboratories carry state of art Instruments in the field of separation processes, energy, environment, biotechnology and Membrane Technology.
We have the honour of our alumni working in some pivotal positions at national and international level. Some of the alumni have proved themselves as successful entrepreneurs, scientists, industrial engineers and as defence scientists etc.
